Hint, Hint

I want to read a poem and know it’s about me.

I want to know someone took the  time to shape

their emotions into words so I could visualize

how they feel about me. Will someone please

write for me?

Dress Up

I’m writing this poem

in lipstick I don’t wear,

on a mirror I won’t look in.

I’m adding color to a reflection

I haven’t seen in years,

cherry red lips you’ll never kiss,

a fictional existence,

the side of me no one will recognize,

painting a lie on the illusion,

playing pretend like the princess

trying on mommy’s clothes.

From Butterfly

*This piece is a submission for a literary magazine with the prompt: Spread Your Wings Into a New Beginning (Strange, ik)*

She took her first breath as a butterfly,

a delicate mix of color and poison,

developed from the toxins she tasted as a child.

She became a woman too soon,

her body transforming before her second breath,

her newfound wisdom guiding her away from the venoms

that used to captivate her.

She now spends her days

spreading her wings as a parrot,

learning how to speak.
